Overview

COYA Sydney, nestled on Pacific Highway in St Leonards, offers a distinctive journey into Middle Eastern cuisine with a modern and sophisticated twist. This restaurant masterfully blends vibrant, punchy flavors with elegant execution, resulting in a memorable dining experience that appeals to both adventurous food lovers and those seeking refined comfort on their plates.

The heart of COYA’s allure lies in its thoughtfully curated degustation menus. Whether you opt for the plant-based six-course journey or their premium ten-course selection, each dish is a showcase of creativity and balance. Highlights such as the delicate scallops paired with pickled apple, truffle-infused flavors, and innovative takes on classic bites like calamares speak to the kitchen’s dedication to freshness and artistry. Notably, the vegan “fish and chips” crafted from banana flowers impress even non-vegans, revealing the chef’s skill at reimagining traditional dishes without compromising on texture or flavor.

The restaurant’s intimate upstairs dining area creates a warm and inviting atmosphere. Guests frequently mention the personal hospitality extended by chef Ashraf and his partner Kit, which enhances the overall experience by bridging the gap between kitchen and table. This connection, paired with the cozy aesthetics, encourages guests to linger and savor every bite.

COYA Sydney’s target audience ranges from curious plant-based diners and pescatarians to lovers of exquisite Middle Eastern fare looking for special occasion dining. The restaurant’s multi-course menus perfectly cater to those who value variety and depth in their meal, allowing them to explore a spectrum of nuanced flavors, from earthy eggplant dishes to the subtle zest of fresh herbs.

While most patrons praise the attentive, heartfelt service and the innovative approach to traditional Middle Eastern dishes, a few have noted occasional inconsistencies in staff attentiveness, particularly during busy periods. Nonetheless, the chef’s dedication to engaging with guests adds a unique, personal touch that many find genuine and memorable.

In summary, COYA Sydney stands out as a beacon of creative Middle Eastern cuisine in the Sydney dining scene. With its vibrant menu, elevated plating, and inviting ambiance, it promises a culinary adventure that resonates beyond the meal itself – ideal for those seeking an elegant yet approachable experience infused with warmth and flair.

Wow, what can I say! A friend and I booked this place for a vegan degustation. Neither of us are vegan, but we wanted to try something a little different to our usual pallate. From the moment we walked in, we were greeted with so much warmth. Both the chef and his partner Kit were extremely lovely and hospitable. We were shown around the restaurant, basically a mini tour which we loved. We were seated in a very intimate dinning area upstairs. The aesthetics were super cute! Our food started to come out and we were so surprised with how much we enjoyed it, I feel like my friend and I were making so many yummy noises the other customers were just waiting for us to eat to see our reactions lol. Everything was very well thought out, from the hummous garden, to the "fish and chips" the fish was made with banana flowers, to the daikon raddish dish was just full of flavour bursts in each bite. Was such a enjoyable experience. My friend and I were extremely happy all round. We promised ourselves we would come back and try the meat degustation next. Upon leaving, the amazing chef/owner gifted us his spices! We were super grateful. We purchased his books and he signed them for us! Thank you so much for such a wonderful experience. Can't wait to show off and bring other family and friends here too. Thank you again chef Ashraf and your Partner Kit for your wonderful humble and hospitable service!

Had the Valentine’s Day special menu. Generally good across the board with a couple of stand out dishes, mainly the venison and abalone. Everything was beautifully presented and looked amazing. Service was a little slow, but think that they had some late issues with staffing. The chef came out to present all the dishes and took time to talk to all the guests.

The food was lovely, however the service was not what I would expect from a hatted restaurant. The staff were more attentive to the large table next to us and we were ignored most of the time. Only brief explanation when each dish was brought to the table. The bill was bought straight to the table after the last dish was cleared away. Not discretely too. Did not ask if we had enjoyed the food or if we would like any coffee or tea. Barely acknowledged by the chef as he spends time talking to the other table. Would not go back again.

This fine dinning restaurant offers far more than just an exceptional meal - we had a truly memorable experience! From the moment we arrived, we were treated like honoured guests. The host greeted us with genuine warmth & generosity, setting the tone for a fantastic culinary experience. Each course was a symphony of savoury delicious flavours and stunning presentation. Every element on the plate was carefully considered, beautifully balanced, and bursting with flavour. The attention to detail in presentation was next-level. The plates arrived looking like a piece of art, not overly fussy, but elegant and intentional, with colours & textures that delighted the eyes as much as the palate. The Chef personally visited each table throughout the evening, checking in with guests and sharing stories behind the menu. I am yet to see this level of care & attention to detail. You can feel his passion for his trade in every bite. Desserts were equally amazing - felt like a symphony on the palate - a perfect finale to a flawless meal. COYA is a must if you value not just fine food, but fine hospitality & service. My beautiful lady & I are definitely returning soon.

Cue the amazing food, and the atmosphere, We dined here and did a degustation and for the first time trying vegan food, and what can I say… we absolutely loved it, the chef and his beautiful wife kit were so beautiful and welcoming and felt like we were at home. The food was absolutely delicious and couldn’t fault any dish, we had 6 courses and every course that came out was explosions of flavour and they say you eat with your eyes, well we sure did, the dishes looked stunning on the plate and photos don’t do justice, if your looking to dine and have a fun time, this is the place to go, it was such an incredible night. Thank you chef and kit for your hospitality and love shown on the plate

The best experience ever! I went with my girl friends for a girls night out and it is definitely one of my top modern Australian restaurant. Starting with the ambience, it is so unique and beautiful with a middle eastern twist. The decorative plates on the ceiling and wall are just divine, I kept looking at them the whole night. We had a 6 course degustation menu. Each dish was equally delicious and gave a different flare from flavour through to texture, we truly enjoyed every bit of it. The staff were extremely friendly. On top of that, chef would personally explained each dish to us. I couldn’t recommend Coya more!
